Virginia Unemployment Information

For unemployment benefits in Virginia, you basically need to do the following:

  • File your first weekly claim within 28 days of the date of initial or new unemployment claim
  • Register with the unemployment agency
  • Look for work each week and make contact with several employers each week
  • Document your work search and be able to submit a complete and accurate record to the Virginia Employment Commission when requested
  • Register on Virginia Workforce Connection

Documentation requirements

Weekly records should include a list of your work search activities, including:
  • Date of application
  • Company name and address
  • Person contacted
  • Telephone number, fax number, and/or e-mail address of the employer
  • Type of work applied for
  • Explanation of results
If you certify by web or phone, you must maintain records at home. If you certify by mail, you must submit your records on the back of the form.
